The facade of a building is considered to be a plant facade when covered by climbing plants. They are those plants that grow from the ground, where they have their roots, and are supported on the surface of the building to grow.
Installing vertical gardens on the facades of buildings is one of the most practical solutions in those cities where there is not enough space to have landscaped areas.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there must be at least 10 to 15 square meters of green areas per capita in cities. In many cities it is the case that there is not enough space to have green areas due to the large amount of population, that is why installing vertical gardens in the buildings is one of the best solutions.
Vertical plant facades can also be called green facades. Today they have become the most trending architectural resource and used in cities, not only because of the design that the building brings to the cities but for the multiple benefits that bring to the environment.
Plants are responsible for absorbing CO2 emissions, and they are lowering levels of air pollution. At the same time, the vegetation of the plant facade acts as a second skin of the building improving the thermal stability of the building.
The leading architect in this type of construction isFrenchman Patrick Blanc. During his last 20 years he has participated in numerous projects of buildings with plant facades, such as the CaixaForumbuilding. It is one of his best known works, located on the Paseo del Prado, which consists of 24 vertical plant meters.
The small difference between the plant facade and the vertical garden.
These are two very similar concepts but with some small difference. On the plant facade of a building are usually used planter systems in which the different types of plants are placed. The only drawback of this technique is that this type of plant is going through the cracks themselves or any space that the structure of the building may have, in this way, can compromise the structure of the building itself.

The advantages of plant facades.
One of the main advantages of buildings with plant facade is the saving of space in cities. As we mentioned earlier, we started that the main reasons they created this type of building was to save space because of the lack of space and resources in the cities.
The green facades also improve the air quality of the building. Plants capture carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, reducing city pollution. In addition, the plants are responsible for absorbing dust and all air particles. If we put all this together, we get a better quality of life for people.
Buildings with plant facades acquire a great insulation both thermal and acoustic. Green facades reduce the ambient temperature of the building. Plants absorb solar radiation and regulate temperature, helping you reduce home acclimatizing costs.
In warmer seasons they reduce overheating the sun in the building and in the colder seasons prevent the transfer of heat from the inside to the outside.
As for the noise,the same would happen, the vertical garden prevents the noise from the outside from passing through the walls.
Of course, the plant facades increase the beauty of the cities,as they come to disguise the aesthetics of many of the old buildings or with poor maintenance.
And finally, the plant facades help protect the facade from rain and ultraviolet radiation.
