To celebrate that last Sunday 19 April was World Bicycle Day,today in the blog we talked about a very favorable news for this means of transport: the impulse of bicycles as a means of transport in front of the coronavirus.

This period of confinement in which we find ourselves has not only greatly favored the reduction of pollution in most of the world, as we mentioned in last month’s article: The positive side of confinement. In addition, in some countries such as China, bicycles are being favoured for a variety of reasons.

Specifically in the region where it was triggered everything, Wuhan, paralyzed all his public transport services except the bicycles, fully available for the mobility of citizens.

In this region the use of bicycles as a means of transport has increased markedly during the coronavirus crisis. According to Hellobike data, the number of long-haul trips in Wuhan tripled from 22 to 24 last January, when the city was quarantined.

Let us not forget that 11 million people live in this city who, in the face of government restrictions on the use of other transports to prevent contagion, have opted for the use of bicycles as the main means of transport,as its use is individual and this ensures that there is no contact between people, without forgetting an important fact, They don’t pollute!

In Spain, according to data from the article of El País, on the impulse of the bicycle as a means of transport against the coronavirus, the Minister of Health, Salvador Illa, has pointed out that the bicycle is a safe means of getting around, since it allows to maintain the safe distance with other people.

The Government is therefore in favour of promoting bicycles as a safer means of transport, while experts recommend taking advantage of this situation in order to be able to modify the current mobility model to a more sustainable one,a fact that is already taking place in cities such as Mexico or Berlin, which have enabled temporary bike lanes during the pandemic.

It is clear that the decline in the use of cars and general mobility restrictions have greatly helped the decline in pollution in many cities, which shows us the environmental improvement that occurs by reducing the use of these means of transport and the great benefits to use others, such as bicycles.

As explained by the professor of Urbanism of the Polytechnic University of Valencia José Luis Miralles in the article of El País,confinement has halved the pollution of the most populated cities of our country. It also asks to take advantage of the situation we are experiencing to expand and promote this means of transport, and to enjoy its many advantages, both for health and the environment.

In the case of our city, Valencia, it has been several years that the use of bicycles in front of cars is being promoted, enabling more space for their circulation and reducing car lanes.

The obvious reduction in pollution due to the absence of pollution of cars presents a great opportunity that has made us see the importance to change the current mobility model to a less polluting one, in this the use of bicycles not only reduces pollution, but also reduces pollution in the current situation, it protects us from possible contagions that could occur, for example, when it comes to traveling by public transport or sharing a car with other people.

In this sense, cities like Barcelona are already recommending displacements occur in their own means or on foot, and recommend especially sustainable means, such as bicycles.

Although, it should be noted that the public bicycle services are closed from the beginning of the confinement, the town halls are rethought to reopen them, always taking into account the greatest disinfection and hygiene possible, with the use of gloves by users and a disinfection of bicycles daily.

With all this we see, once again, the big and simple improvements that we can all implement to reduce pollution from our cities and lead a more sustainable and environmentally conscious lifestyle Environment.

And you, do you know the ecological means of transport to go around the city without polluting?
